How Does Antifreeze Work?

Don’t you love it when a product’s name tells you exactly what it does? Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is one such product. This brightly colored solution lowers a liquid’s freezing point, which is why we add it to our vehicles’ radiators. A mixture of chemicals and water, antifreeze helps ensure that the liquid in your engine doesn’t freeze in winter or overheat in summer. Learn how antifreeze works and why maintaining proper levels is key to engine health.

Don’t you love it when a product’s name tells you exactly what it does? Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is one such product. This brightly colored solution lowers a liquid’s freezing point, which is why we add it to our vehicles’ radiators. A mixture of chemicals and water, antifreeze helps ensure that the liquid in our radiators doesn’t freeze in the winter or boil over in the summer (overheating the engine), and in doing so, it protects our engines from damage year-round. However, you might be wondering: how does antifreeze work?

Although water is able to hold some of an engine’s heat, most engines require a mixture of water and chemicals, more commonly known as

           antifreeze

. This product is a crucial component of the cooling system, as it helps the car operate in a variety of temperatures, from the frigid cold to the scorching heat. Most of the time, engine coolant is made of a combination of water and ethylene glycol (C2H6O2).

So how does antifreeze protect your engine? The key lies in the boiling and freezing points.

           BOILING & FREEZING POINTS

Pure water, as you may know, has a boiling point of 212°F (100°C) and a freezing point of 32°F (0°C). However, when you create a 50/50 mixture using water and ethylene glycol, the boiling point rises to 223°F (106°C) and the freezing point lowers to -35°F (-37°C). When you take it one step further, creating a 30/70 mixture of water and ethylene glycol, the boiling point rises to 235°F (113°C) and the freezing point lowers to -67°F (-55°C).

Why does this happen? Well, when water freezes, it expands and crystallizes. If we add chemicals to water, however, the molecules will have to work harder to join together and crystallize. Their struggle results in a lower freezing point. So in the end, inexpensive water and functional coolant form the perfect pair.

           CYCLING THROUGH THE SYSTEM

To maintain the cooling system’s temperature, antifreeze is pumped through the engine and the heater core, where it absorbs excess heat. It also runs through the radiator, dissipating heat to the outside air. The antifreeze runs through this cycle continuously until it becomes old and contaminated. Eventually, of course, it will need to be replaced to ensure that it remains effective.

Although water is useful in many ways, its properties make it a substandard cooling product. Antifreeze was developed to add strength to water, reducing its deficiencies and broadening its capabilities. Without it, you could destroy your engine and cause corrosion and sediment build-up. Extreme temperatures add to the problem. Why take the risk?If you’re ready to schedule a cooling system flush for your vehicle, contact Seeburg Service Center today. We have been in the auto repair business since 1972, and although we specialize in mufflers and exhaust systems, our expertise extends to all sorts of car repairs and maintenance, including cooling system flushes. Our two auto shops are locally owned and operate in Fayetteville (AR) and Rogers (AR). To contact our efficient, knowledgeable mechanics, simply give us a call or schedule an appointment online.

In 1969, only 54% of domestic automobiles included air conditioning, and those of you who were around in the pre-AC days can attest to the sticky, sweltering discomfort of driving on a hot summer day. These days, many people can’t imagine the misery of a long road trip in the summer without air conditioning. Although we often take it for granted today, your vehicle’s A/C system plays a vital role in comfort and safety—learn how it works and why regular service is essential.

These days, many people can’t imagine the misery of a long road trip in the summer without

           air conditioning

. Although we often forget to appreciate how good we have it in 2020, you never know when your air conditioner might break. And do you know what to do if your car air conditioner stops blowing cold air? There’s a right way and a wrong way to address the problem—and believe me, you don’t want to make a mistake!

It’s a warm day and you’re feeling the heat as you jump into your car. You turn the knob to start the AC but . . . nothing. Instead of the cool air you crave, the air conditioner blows out warm air that makes the car feel stuffier. What should you do?

           DO: Call your mechanic.

AC systems are complicated, so to fix the problem as soon as possible without damaging your car, contact a trustworthy auto technician. Call as soon as you can, especially if the forecast promises hot and sunny days. Driving without air conditioning isn’t just uncomfortable; it can also be dangerous!

In addition, pay attention to the details of the problem so that you can provide your mechanic with useful information. For example, when did your AC stop working? Do any strange noises or smells accompany the problem? What does the air coming out of the vents feel like? Is the air cold initially (before fading) or is it consistently warm? These details might help your mechanic diagnosis the problem more quickly.

DON’T: Attempt to solve the problem yourself with canned freon.

Although we know it’s tempting to take the reins and attempt to fix the car yourself, we strongly advise against this. Some people purchase canned freon at Wal-Mart, hoping it will improve their car’s air conditioning, but this “solution” will more than likely damage your car’s entire A/C system, which includes some very expensive components such as the air compressor. Under no circumstances should you buy this product!

           DO: Look into possible causes.

Although we urge you to trust your mechanic with any AC issues, we can’t blame you for being curious. Plus, it never hurts to learn a little more about what’s going on behind-the-scenes in your car. So what caused your air conditioner to stop working? Most likely, your AC system lost its charge of refrigerant. Or, due to an electrical fault, its compressor is not engaging when you turn on the system. Another possibility is that an internal obstruction is blocking the circulation of refrigerant. Finally, if a blend air door in your HVAC unit is stuck on “heat,” cool air won’t be able to flow into the cabin. Another important item to check is the cabin air filter. If it’s clogged or dirty, harmful contaminants will enter the interior of your vehicle.

Has your AC stopped working? If you’re located in Springfield (MO) or northwest Arkansas, give ASE-certified Seeburg Service Center a call. Our experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly mechanics will work hard to get your air conditioning system back into gear ASAP. To get started, please

What is the purpose of an exhaust emission system?

Your vehicle’s exhaust system is designed to take care of toxic emissions your car produces. It will 1) direct harmful hydrocarbons away from the driver and passengers, and 2) reduce the air pollution your car releases into the environment, helping keep the air clean. An additional benefit is that the exhaust system significantly reduces the amount of noise your car makes. An exhaust system in working order will keep your car sounding pleasant as it runs and will reduce noxious gases.

Where is my car’s exhaust system?

The part of the exhaust system you can easily see is the exhaust pipe under the back of your car, but the entire system is actually much larger and more involved than that. The entire exhaust system runs from just behind the engine and along the underside of your vehicle, ending with the tailpipe.

How does an exhaust system work?

What’s left of the gases exits your car through the tailpipe.

How will I know if my exhaust system needs a repair?

One of the first things people notice when their exhaust system is malfunctioning is the amount of noise their cars make. Your car will begin to sound much more unpleasant if the muffler is out of order. Another sign is having to stop by the gas station more often, as the exhaust system affects your car’s air-fuel mixture. Additionally, your car’s check engine light might come on. Once you notice one of these signs, get to a repair shop as soon as you can. Waiting to fix this can damage your car and will result in a more expensive repair.

Sometimes, though, problems with your exhaust system may go unnoticed without a professional inspection. For this reason and others, it’s a good idea to have a mechanic inspect your vehicle at least once per year.
